Our annual election meeting took place on November 17th at Gofore in Helsinki. It was great to gather together to shape the future of our association and elect our new leadership for 2026.

Serving on the board of Agile Finland is a valuable opportunity to contribute to Finland’s Agile community, learn new things, and connect with professionals who share similar interests. We spoke with two board members, Sari Alander and Pascal Papathemelis, who shared their experiences and perspectives on board work.

Sari’s Journey with the Board of Agile Finland

Sari Alander joined the board to engage more deeply with Finland’s Agile community and find a place where she could contribute. She has appreciated the collaboration with fellow board members who share her values. Being on the board has also allowed her to take part in the association’s events, which she feels have improved over time.

Sari believes that Agile Finland wouldn’t be the same without the active efforts of the board, which facilitates event organization and strives to develop the association.

Since 2018, Sari has served as the treasurer and is proud of her role in improving the association’s financial management. She encourages new candidates to consider joining, noting that while no prior experience is required, commitment is essential.

“This team is absolutely fantastic. You get an incredible front-row seat to Finland’s Agile community. Come join us!” Sari warmly invites.
 

Pascal’s Insights into Serving on the Board of Agile Finland

Pascal Papathemelis joined the board with a goal to contribute to its work while also learning in the process. His prior role as an internal auditor gave him insights into potential improvements. Pascal has appreciated the collaboration with other board members and supporting different events.

Pascal has served as the secretary and managed the association’s Google environment, membership registry, and several other areas. One of his significant achievements has been cleaning up the membership registry in line with GDPR requirements, ensuring that it stays accurate. The registry contained over 800 members, many of whom were unaware of their status.

Pascal encourages new candidates to apply, highlighting the opportunity to network and gain an understanding of the association’s work. 

“If you have the passion, jump right in! The work is highly rewarding, and you get to make a real difference in ensuring Finland’s Agile community thrives,” Pascal enthusiastically recommends.

The Agile Finland "Back to Work" workshop at Reaktor on 30th August was a facilitation on upcoming topics. We are just starting to plan future presentations on Flight Levels, Conflicts, UpCloud, Change Leadership and Story mapping. They are coming later this fall and in early 2024. 

The events are normally held on the 3rd Monday of every month, but may vary based on holidays and other Agile events. The next event will be on 6th November and topic is Kata.

In your thesis, you’re exploring an important part of the software development flow: the continuous integration and continuous delivery pipeline. How did you originally come across this topic?

This came from my Bachelor’s thesis that I wrote some years ago. When I started planning that thesis, DevOps was popping up as a theme everywhere. I didn’t find much information about it in any course materials so I decided to contribute to the topic. I chose a technical perspective, more specifically the deployment pipeline for a microservices web app. Later, when I started working on my Master’s thesis, it was easy to continue on the same topic.

How did you find time to work on the thesis? What challenges or surprises did you experience?

While I was writing this thesis, I was also working for LUT University. The job was to design an online course about the same topic. This arrangement was very good, as it allowed me to do my work and also write my thesis about it. It took me about one long summer to get it done, from May to August. The only surprise was the writing process: creating a Master’s thesis takes much more time than a Bachelor’s thesis.

Much of the effort was actually technical. I took a private web app called BetterWork that I had been working on previously, and built a reference CI/CD implementation for it using modern cloud technologies. The pieces that required the most brain cells were the research method and the practical perspective. Other than that, it was fairly straightforward..

What was the outcome of your research? Are there some takeaways that you would like to highlight?

In my thesis, I’m presenting a five-phase framework that helps people focus on the right questions when designing a deployment pipeline. There is a one-pager that you can use as a reference. The framework is useful for people who are new to continuous deployment, but those who are already experienced in building CD pipelines may not find that much new information here.

Any tips and tricks to thesis writers?

It’s important to find a topic that interests you, otherwise the work will be very boring. Planning and managing your time is essential. It will also be helpful if you can find a project that involves either the university or a company.

And what are your plans now?

I’m working for a small company here in Joensuu. We’re only around 20 employees, so the work domain is very broad. It includes development, architecture and DevOps technology.

Your thesis touches on product ownership and release planning in a very practical way. Would you mind explaining how you came up with this topic? 

At Accountor Finago Oy we have approximately a dozen agile teams that collaborate to create releases. As I was looking around for a topic for my thesis, we started discussing release planning from a work management perspective. We couldn’t find anything applicable in that area, so I simply decided to start researching the topic myself. The Product Owner role entered the picture later as I started to narrow down the topic.

In your thesis, you managed to maintain a level of academic rigour that far exceeds the normal expectations on a Master’s thesis. How did you achieve that?

Most case studies seem to end up collecting dust on a shelf. I wanted instead to do something that would also be useful for others, some solid research that would be easy to present and motivate at work. I also wanted to keep an open mind towards different outcomes. Those were perhaps the primary drivers.

I managed to find good research methods — grounded theory and affinity diagrams — that supported this kind of work. As an added bonus, the methods also kind of triangulated each other. During the thesis work, I was able to collect a good amount of materials and interviews, which no doubt helped create more perspectives.

What were the results or your research? What can other companies take away?

Practically, we started running a weekly Scrum of Scrums for the PO:s, to help share knowledge and handle impediments in a timely manner. We also started a monthly retro for the PO:s to start changing the ways of working in the company. It was nice to see that these were seen as valuable and meaningful by the PO:s, and brought concrete positive effects rather than being seen as an added burden. It may have helped that this was a small group of people. These direct results are difficult to generalise, but to some extent they may still be useful for other similar organisations.

What might be even more useful is action research as a method or approach. It’s not very common in the software industry and could be used more extensively for example in retrospectives. Action research doesn’t give quick results, as it requires time and effort. On the upside, it gives some structure to the work, and also bridges practice and theory very nicely.

What are your plans for the future? Are you aiming for an academic career?

After graduating I started working as a Scrum Master and Agile Coach and that’s what I’m interested in right now. There’s been some discussions about applying for post-graduate studies, but nothing concrete yet. We’ll see what happens!

Leadership is a well-established academic topic that has received a lot of attention over the years. One would think that there is little to add to it by now. What was it that made you interested in this topic?
It was clear to me from the start that the topic would be connected to agility in some way. I was working with the customer service department in my company, and we knew that the ongoing change would be huge for them, especially from the leadership perspective. Discussing with my colleagues and with my thesis instructor, we ended up with leadership as the focus area.

What did you find easy and what did you find challenging when writing your thesis?

One thing that was easy was creating a framework in my thesis. I was afraid that this would be challenging, but it turned out to be easier than I expected. The most challenging part was to stay objective. When you also work in the same organisation that you are studying, it’s easy to get biassed. I kept this in mind at all times, and listened with open ears instead of injecting my own ideas.

From your research, you were able to draw a good number of practical conclusions. Is there anything that surprised you about these outcomes?
Generally, the teams got a good start on the path to self-organisation. While this is a long journey, we are starting to observe some of the results and benefits that we expected to see. People have started collaborating and solving problems in pairs and smaller groups. 

What surprised me was the lack of emergent leadership. Emergent leadership means that individuals step up and take charge as needed, but we didn’t really see this happen. As the department hierarchy was flattened, the leader of the department got a large number of direct reports, and some of the operative work of the leader was then delegated back to the teams in the form of a number of “hats”. This was centrally planned and not emergent as such. Also, some team leads were former specialists, and returned to this position again when the hierarchy was flattened. We found that the team members still considered them leaders and turned to them with questions and problems, which slowed down the self-organisation. They should move to other teams rather than go back to their old teams.

Another interesting thing is that when the teams started taking on more responsibilities, we observed that the authority and accountability were not always in balance. We had to inspect and adapt.

Social research and especially case studies are often difficult to generalise. Are there some takeaways that you feel would be of interest to other companies?

One thing that stands out is that every team is different. Some teams are very dependent on their manager, and require a lot of support to let go. In our case, some teams were even afraid of how they would be able to perform in the future. Others were already self-managing and quite ready to step up and take charge.

Another thing is that agility is an attribute of a mature team. If you don’t have a proper team, then it becomes difficult to achieve a good level of agility. For example, if the team composition changes, the agility level is likely to drop.

I should also mention that the change is just as difficult for the mid-level managers as it is for the teams. The managers need to learn to change their own habits, and it’s a good investment to give them training and follow up on how they are adopting the new leadership styles. The same goes for training the teams, and coaching should also be available in their own working environment. But this needs to be balanced, because if you give a team too much support and facilitation, they don’t find much reason to self-organise.

Writing a thesis is a difficult process that requires dedication and sisu. Any tips for people who are just starting on their thesis work?

First of all, find a topic that interests you. It’s much easier to find energy that way. Second, focus on the work until it’s done. Of course you need to think over things sometimes, but don’t leave the thesis out of your hands for long.

Finally, what are your plans for the future?

Last autumn I started working as a Customer Experience Manager for the customer support department that I wrote my thesis about. This is a new role that is being piloted until August this year. I work as a sparring help for teams, and promoting common ways of working across team boundaries. In sum, I help the business area function better as a whole. What happens after that? We’ll see!

Agile Finland r.y. would like to acknowledge master’s theses of special merit related to the field of agile development, by awarding the prize of 1 000 € each to the three best theses published in 2022.

We hope that these awards will encourage master’s students towards choosing agile topics in their theses, and thus bring the agile field forward on both the scientific and the practical side. We also hope that this will be the start of a great annual tradition.

Award Categories

The awards will be given in three categories. Nominated theses compete in all three categories simultaneously, but each thesis can only receive one award.

Category 1: the Academic Award

The Academic Award will be given to a thesis with a high degree of novelty, potentially high levels of industry and academic impact, and performed using high academic standards, based on votes from all supervisors who have nominated a thesis. (Supervisors can’t vote for their own nominee.)

Category 2: the Industry Award

⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠The Industry Award will be given to the thesis with the highest practical or business impact, as chosen by an expert reviewer. For the 2022 award, the expert reviewer and sole judge will be Maarit Laanti, PhD.

Category 3: the Public Favourite Award

The Public Favourite Award will be given to the thesis that receives the largest number of votes from the members of Agile Finland r.y.

Eligibility

to be eligible for the 2022 awards, the following criteria must be fulfilled:

1. The thesis supports the mission of Agile Finland r.y., by being related to agile theory or a field of application. This includes but is not limited to agile processes and roles, leadership and organisation, strategy, infrastructure, culture and identity, organisational development, etc.
2. The thesis is published and publicly available.
3. ⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠The thesis has been accepted by a Finnish university in the calendar year of 2021.
4. The nomination is submitted to Agile Finland r.y. before May 6, 2022 by a thesis supervisor at a Finnish university.
   
   

Instructions

To apply, the nominating supervisor and the thesis author should send a free-form e-mail with the relevant attachments and links to thesisaward@agile.fi. We accept one nomination per supervisor per year, and the nomination can be submitted any time before the deadline.

The following information should be included:

1. The thesis, complete with cover page and abstract (either in PDF format, or as a link to an online thesis archive where it can be freely downloaded)
2. Contact information for both the nominating supervisor and the author
3. The thesis evaluation and any other qualitative statements about the thesis created as part of the university’s evaluation process
4. A short written statement (max. ½ page) motivating how this thesis interconnects with agile thinking and why you believe this thesis stands out among the rest
5. ⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠⁠A free-form layman’s summary of the thesis (max. ½ page), to be used when the thesis is presented for the Public Favourite Award

The winner of each category will receive 1 000 € and a diploma in a formal ceremony at the next Scan Agile conference, the largest annual agile conference in the Nordics. (For taxation purposes, the prize will be considered as a stipend for studies or scientific research.)

The winners will also have an opportunity to make a presentation of the thesis in that conference.

Business Agility: Sakke Mustonen - Design thinking as agile accelerator

By now, Design Thinking has earned its place in the vocabulary of digital transformation. Lately it has been elevated as a visible part of many large scale agile delivery frameworks. However, Design Thinking is still often considered as a responsibility of a few dedicated roles, and not all frameworks are providing concrete, pragmatic guidelines on how to apply and scale Design Thinking through the daily end-to-end toolset of a lean organisation as a whole. If you are interested in hearing about field-tested methods and tools beyond frameworks, join this inspiring presentation to learn and discuss how Design Thinking can help your organisation to reach true user centric agility. You will learn how to apply Design Thinking in keeping your end-users in the centre, inducing more motivated teams, tackling complexity, managing risks, and prioritising more accurately. Design Thinking should not be a privilege of your dedicated UX- or Service Design team only – come and learn how to elevate Design Thinking to become a valuable part of the whole journey from portfolio management to team-level problem solving. 

Tech Excellence: Thierry de Pauw - 15 teams, 1 monolith and 4 months to achieve Continuous Delivery 

15 teams, 1 shared monolith, 1 release every 6 months, and product demand for 1 release every 2 weeks. How do you know where to start with Continuous Delivery, when you’re surrounded by technology and organisational challenges?

This is the journey of 15 teams and their 1 shared monolith, at a federal Belgian agency. They increased their throughput from bi-annual releases to fortnightly releases in under 4 months, achieving a state of Continuous Delivery.

I’ll cover how we used the Improvement Kata, Value Stream Mapping, and the Theory Of Constraints to choose which changes to apply first, and kickstart the organisational changes we needed to improve quality and drive down lead times.

If you thought Continuous Delivery was just for the happy few having trendy microservices, think again!

Keynote by Jennifer Fawcett - The Science of Empathy: Practical ways to Foster Innovation

This keynote will explore the science behind empathy and why it is important to business. Jennifer Fawcett, student and practitioner of empathy, will describe its role in her personal and professional life. The audience will discover how it fuels the most successful companies and creates diverse working environments that people love. We’ll also explore a set of practices that you can use to create empathetic organizations that stimulates design thinking, enables innovation, and ultimately, social responsibility. The audience will leave inspired with techniques to apply empathy to their own business.

Our theme at the event was Business Agility - the ability that organizations need to have in order to survive and thrive in the digital age. Whether it was the chosen theme or the attractiveness of Tampere in the middle of the winter - we seemed to find our audience. The event took place on January 23rd and was sold out one month before the date. The 200 conference participants represented 64 different companies or public organisations and our speakers came from Finland, Norway, Spain, Germany and UK. The atmosphere at the conference was international - yet very much local, thanks to the unique venue of Paja Kongressi, which is very conveniently located just 5 minutes away from the Tampere railway station. 

At the moment we are planning a series of Agile Meetups in Tampere during this year. If you have ideas for a speech or a workshop in Meetup context, please give us a shout. And what comes to Agile Tampere 2021 - yes, it will take place next year! Stay in touch!

Agile Tampere is a new one-day conference organised by Agile Finland ry. The event takes place on January 23th 2020 at Sokos Hotel Torni, Tampere, Finland. In this event, we want to move away from ‘doing agile’ and start exploring ways to get truly meaningful outcomes and business agility. We would like to provide new thinking, models, practices, real-life stories and tips on why and how to shake the organisational structures, create agile decision making models and value driven portfolios, make investment decisions, measure the results and lead our people.
